Just When You Thought Lady Gaga Couldn't Get Any More Awesome

Just When You Thought Lady Gaga Couldn't Get Any More Awesome - As the editor of the Celebrity 100, I’ve been impressed by Lady Gaga for the last few years. She’s made a ton of money ($142 million in the last two years by our count) by churning out great pop music and happily working with corporate America while remaining one of the most unique celebrities in the world.

She’s also been a model celebrity when it comes to connecting with her fans. Few are more honest and more engaged that Gaga. She shares what she feels even when it gets her in trouble like when she wrote that she was eating a salad but dreaming of a cheese burger.

Some took issue with Gaga for that tweet because she has always been such an outspoken advocate of her Little Monsters loving themselves for who they are and not giving in to the pressure to be thin that so often results in serious eating disorders. But I loved that tweet. So many celebrities publicize how they lost weight just by eating grilled chicken and fruit for lunch and doing yoga three times a week and how really easy it was.

But anyone who has actually struggled with weight knows it’s incredibly hard and that often, when we’re eating salads, we’re dreaming of cheese burgers and that pop stars only look the way they do because of lots of uncomfortable, hard work (and good genes).

Now Gaga is in the spotlight again because of weight with some web sites criticizing her for gaining weight. Radar said that Gaga has piled on the pounds with others speculating (of course) that she’s pregnant.

Instead of hiding under her bed and crying. Gaga has posted photos of herself in a skimpy bikini (looking healthy and amazing) and started a Body Revolution section of her website where she is encouraging other girls to post photos of themselves with pride.

It’s such a smart move. Gaga is once again reaching out to her many fans and making them part of what she’s going through. And she’s doing it in such an empowering way. I don’t know many stars who would turn this kind of criticism into a social media opportunity but Gaga has done it with style and class.

Other celebrities could take some lessons from Gaga. If you can honestly engage your fan base, they’ll be there for you no matter what and you can turn to them for help in times of PR crises.

I really hope that moves like this can make a difference and give girls confidence to feel comfortable in their own bodies. I don’t know that it can counteract the much heavier weight of a thousand skinny stars flaunting their size zero figures. But it’s also worth mentioning here Lena Dunham’s fantastic appearance in the Emmy opening video. Several actresses hear sobbing from a bathroom stall and open the door to find Dunham naked, eating a cake, not crying guiltily but munching away happily. Way to go Dunham and Gaga. ( Forbes )
